Well I have heard of a hole in the wall coffee shop, but a hole in the shed coffee shop?
During a recent trip to New Zealand, I was in the Bay of Islands and in need of a coffee. All the locals kept telling me about The Coffee Shed…well what a find this was!
The shed looks like a small barn 3 x 4 metres with large doors which open up at the side, where the owners Bekie and Neil, back there van into the shed and start making coffee. The van is fitted with a 2 group Wega coffee machine and a mazzer grinder. So really it’s a mobile coffee van in a shed. What a brilliant idea to get around the local Council and Health Department laws about operating a coffee shop!
They have sourced their beans from a coffee roaster in Wellington called Havana Coffee. Their web site is well worth a look at www.havana.co.nz. The Havana blend they are using was great with my piccolo latté.
The owners are both from England and were travelling around New Zealand when their car broke down in the Bay of Islands, and that was 3 years ago. They work in cafes around the local area while waiting for the opportunity to run their own business. The Coffee Shed is open Monday to Saturday 7 am to 1 pm and Sunday 8 am to 12 pm.
They also had an amazing selection of cookies and slices, but if you are expecting an area to sit and watch the world go past, you will be disappointed – there are only 5 seats and a couple of folding tables.
So please add The Coffee Shed’s address to your coffee lifestyle diary and stop in for a coffee when passing.
