How Do I Store My Coffee?

Green Beans

Green beans or unroasted coffee has a shelf life of a year or more.
Just ensure you store them in a cool dry location. They don’t need airtight
storage, just ensure you keep out any pests. Most vendors store them in
burlap bags. Don’t refrigerate or freeze your green beans.

Roasted Whole Beans

Whole Bean Roasted coffee can be consumed up to 30 days after roasting. The peak
flavour is generally achieved up to 15 days after roasting. After this time the coffee
will begin to deteriorate. To ensure the
maximum shelf-life from your roasted
coffee you should store your coffee in a
cool, dark, oxygeneless environment. The
perfect storage method is in our special
coffee bags, which we deliver all our
roasted coffees in.

These snap lock bags block out all light.
As well as being fitted with a one way
valve, which allows you to bleed any air
out of the bag.

Many factors cause the decline of flavour
after roasting, including the oxidation of
oils and other compounds exposed to
atmospheric oxygen, after roasting. This
damages bean cell wall integrity, and
causes the evaporation of flavour-active
volatile compounds.

Roasting coffee beans produces a
significant amount of carbon dioxide
(CO2) gas; this CO2 preserves
freshness to the extent that it excludes
atmospheric oxygen. Carbon dioxide continues to leach from roasted
coffee for a period of time after roasting. When you receive one
of our bags of roasted coffee you’ll notice that it’s bloated with
carbon dioxide. This will help preserve your coffee in transit.

It is important to never refrigerate or freeze your roasted coffee. Coffee
is Porous. Therefore, it can absorb flavours and moisture from your freezer.
The absorbed moisture will deteriorate the oils and cell structure of your coffee
Which will make your gourmet coffee beans taste like your freezer.

Ground Roasted Coffee

Coffee grounds will deteriorate far more quickly than whole roasted beans. This is Due
to the increased surface area of ground coffee. You will be able to keep ground coffee
fresh for around a day, if stored in a proper airtight coffee bag. Exposed ground coffee
will deteriorate within half an hour.

It is for this reason that we recommend that you only grind coffee, when you are going to
brew yourself a cup. We currently supply three different grinders without dosers and one with
a doser. There are two Isomac Grinders and one Domobar Grinder. These machines will grind
directly into your grouphead.

We also supply an ECM grinder, which has a doser. This is appropriate for people who consume
more than a couple of cups of coffee a day.
